July Garden Update

The tomato plants are growing like crazy and obviously the tomato hornworm agrees and wants in on the action – in 2 days I found and destroyed 19 of the pesky worms and the chickens didn’t even like them. I am guessing they taste awful. I really don’t understand why these creatures even exist!

I have several different heirloom varieties growing – Italian Heirloom, Purple Cherokee, Trophy, Fox Cherry and Brandywine.  Along the lower edge there I have several watermelon plants growing – also heirloom – Moon and Stars …

baby watermelon Baby watermelon – they have spots on them and the yellow dot is a spot!  The leaves are also like this, thus, the name Moon and Stars.

The tomatillos are doing very good also – this is a first for me …they grow in this husk and when ripe I guess pop out – I will see!

Although the weather earlier in the month was 100 degrees it did cool off a bit and even rained for us.  The construction of my birthday gift was a challenge but worked out Great!  Part of this mini shed/house was originally slated as a chicken coop BUT once it was built I changed my mind.  I would rather have another smaller coop built for them off the side of my mini house.  The windows still need to be installed and some final touches but I love it!

I can’t forget to mention the pea harvest!!  I love peas from the garden – they are so sweet and crunchy … Peas to shell 7-7-09 I had a ton!

Made a delicious Garden Pea, Basil Potato Salad ….. Yum!
